FAQs

So, we wanted to explain a topic that can sometimes confuse renters: pre-authorizations vs. charges.

Pre-Authorizations

  • Electric Vehicle Charging Deposit: Because your card on file is charged after the completion of a visit to a Supercharger or third-party charger, there is an up-front $1 pre-authorization that takes place on your provided card. This ensures that the form of payment is valid and has funds to pay for charging fees.

On your bank or credit card account, the charge will stay “pending” but not be deducted from or charged to your account. Upon completion of your rental period, if there are no outstanding charging fees, the $1 will be released and disappear from the  “processing” section. You will not see a $1 refund to your account because the $1 was never debited from your account.

  • Security Deposit: Following the approval of your insurance, you will see a $200 authorization for the security deposit. Just like the charging hold, the $200 fee will stay in “processing” mode until the vehicle is returned and our team has confirmed there are no damages or additional fees that need to be applied (see our policies page for more details).

Charges

  • Rental Rate: Following the pre-authorizations, your card will be charged for the total rental rate, including any add-ons that you chose at the time of reservation (ex: Damage Waiver, Unlimited Mileage), and taxes. These fees are deducted from your bank account or charged to your credit card and are fully processed at the time of checkout.

If you have any further questions regarding the deposits on your rental, our customer service team is here to assist.
