Yes.
Renters must have full comprehensive and collision insurance.
In most cases, private auto insurance policies will cover the use of a rental with equal coverage limits and deductibles.
Keep in mind that personal auto coverage policies do have deductibles, so while you are “covered,” out of pocket costs may still incur.
At Vehicle Solutions, we offer a damage waiver, which is an additional add-on to your private insurance.
When renting with Vehicle Solutions, we recommend consulting your personal insurance company first to confirm what is covered under your policy before you make a reservation.
If you have no form of private auto insurance, unfortunately, we cannot rent to you.
Insurance can be confusing, and there are a lot of options you have to ensure you are covered during your rental period. So, here’s a few explanations that will help you better understand what insurance you currently carry and what options are available to you.
Liability Insurance
This type of policy typically covers someone else’s medical bills should they be injured in an accident caused by you. It also typically covers property that was damaged by the rental car you are driving.
Comprehensive Insurance
Comprehensive insurance covers all non-collision accidents. Examples include weather damage, falling trees, theft, etc.
Collision Insurance
The name explains it all. This is insurance that covers you in the event you get into an accident. More often than not, a comprehensive and collision policy is sold together as a package.
Damage Waiver
A damage waiver will release the renter from responsibility for damage that occurs to the rental car, subject to exclusions. If you do not have comprehensive and collision insurance, we recommend adding the daily damage waiver.
Homeowners, Renters, or Condo Policy
If you hold any of these types of insurance, any personal belongings you keep in the rental car will most likely be covered as well.
Credit Cards
Although many credit cards do offer auto rental insurance as a perk, unfortunately, Teslas are often omitted from coverage. Before opting to use insurance through your credit card provider, we encourage you to review the fine print.
You are responsible for maintaining ACTIVE insurance through the entirety of your rental period. The cost of this will change depending on your chosen policy.
If you opt in for a damage waiver, the cost is $30/day, $25/day if you prepay for a 7-day booking, or $20/day if you prepay for a month. The cost of a damage waiver decreases to $20/day if you are renting for over a week.
There are still a few questions we often get asked….
Does the damage waiver cover damage to other vehicles?
The damage waiver does not cover damage caused to another vehicle, however, our required minimum state liability insurance would cover any damage to another person’s vehicle.
Do I still need personal car insurance if I opt in for the damage waiver?
Yes, the damage waiver is an additional form of coverage, not a full policy.
